What to Do If Your Car Is Recalled?

What Is Recall of a Vehicle?

When the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) or a car manufacturer discovers a possible safety risk with a vehicle or a specific component on the car, the car is recalled. The most general recalls include brakes, fuel, airbags, steering, fire safety, and seat belts. If your vehicle is identified, the severity of the problem will determine the following actions, which the DVSA or manufacturer will notify you of. How to Know about the Recall?

The NHTSA states that after a recall is determined and a report is made, the manufacturers must attempt to contact registered owners and purchasers of the vehicles by first class mail within 60 days. (State motor vehicle agencies are where you can get this information.) According to the NHTSA, the letter should tell owners how to correct the problem, when the remedy will be available, how long the repair should take, and who to contact if any issues are getting the repair done. It will also remind vehicle owners that repairing the vehicle’s problem should be free of charge.

Also, consumers are provided with an online tool to search for recalls using the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

What to Do If Your Vehicle Is Recalled?

If you’ve got a letter concerning a recall, carefully read it to see what you should do. Typically, the manufacturer will direct you to contact your local dealer to schedule a repair or replacement.

If your vehicle is subject to a manufacturer safety recall, the parts should be serviced or replaced free of charge by the manufacturer.
