Step-by-step Guide to Change a Flat Tire

Here are the steps to help you change a flat tire in your car.

  • Firstly, park your car in a flat, stable, and safe place away from traffic and turn on your emergency flashers (hazard lights).
  • Apply the handbrake brake (also known as a parking brake or emergency brake) and place a heavy object like rock or brick in front of the front and back tires.
  • Next, take out the spare tire, wrench, and jack. Position the jack under the frame near the flat tire and raise it until it supports (but does not lift) the car.
  • Now secure the wrench onto the tire’s lug nuts and turn it counterclockwise to loosen them one by one. Make sure each nut is just loose enough and not removed from the tire.
  • Next, pump or crank the jack to lift the entire tire off the ground. And then remove the nuts altogether to release the tire.
  • Now, place the spare tire on the hub and align its rim with the wheel bolts to put on the lug nuts.
  • Tighten the lug nuts by your hand until they are all snug. Then lower the car without applying total weight on the tire. Tighten the nuts as much as possible.
  • Next, lower the car to the ground fully and remove the jack. Finish tightening the nuts.
  • You can put the flat tire in your trunk and take it to a mechanic or service center later.
